Summary

After decades of trade liberalization, geared to reap efficiency gains from international specialization in production, attention has shifted to adverse effects of economic integration, including its distributional consequences and the risk of supply chain disruptions. What’s more, international trade has become highly politicized due to geopolitical conflicts and the protectionist agenda of populist parties.

Against this backdrop, the JRG examines the backlash to globalization at a macro and micro-level. The research agenda addresses how the political economy of trade policy evolved, how firms adapt to the efficiency-resilience trade-off pushed for by policymakers, and which contribution globalization played in the rise of populist parties.
